Instructor: Mrs. Amy Bedenbaugh
The online book fair is coming soon!  Check out the link below for more info about both our online and school book fairs.

Pl
ease read through all of the announcements below to see what we've been up to this year.  There are additional links located on the side navigation menu.

The media center serves as the information center of our school. Ourstudents MUST become powerful users of information if they are to be successful in the world of the 21st century in which they live.  Students will be encouraged to use the Media Center and Media Center lab regularly to do research, read for pleasure, and conduct learning activities. We encourage you to support our efforts to help our students become “lifelong learners”  through regular library use.

First and Second grade students are allowed to check out during their library class and at other times, but K4 and K5 students only check out when their entire class comes to the library.  Check-out periods are two weeks for 1st and 2nd grades and one week for K4 and K5 students.

Class Announcements
Begin shopping online January 31st
 http://bookfairs.scholastic.com/homepage/blprimarybookfair

Click the link above to visit our book fair homepage.  Books ordered from the online fair will be delivered to school after the online fair closes.  Many books that aren't available at the regular fair can be found online.  Feel free to share this link with out of town family if they would like to buy books for your child.

Got Books? Program
The Batesburg-Leesville and Twin City Rotary Clubs will join us for a fun filled evening on January 31st entitled "Got Books?".  This free event will be hosted by local actor and reading advocate Lancer Shull and me (Media Specialist Amy Bedenbaugh).  We will have prizes for parents who attend the program and we will offer them monthly tips throughout the rest of the school year to help them find good books to read to and with their children.  We hope to see you there!
Give the Gift of Reading
As the holidays approach I know many parents are shopping for books to add to their child's at home library.  The following tips may be helpful when choosing books for your child:

1.  Ask your child about his/her interests and the types of books they like to read.  Try to buy books that your children will want to pick up and read again and again.
2.  Choose some books that your child can read independently, but add in a few that you can read together.  I'd be glad to recommend some if you if you need some suggestions.
3.  Is your child ready for a series?  In the past most series books have been geared toward 3rd graders and older, but there are several new series books for younger students.
4.  Are you interested in purchasing an electronic reading device (Nook, Kindle, iPad, other eReader)?  Many new books are available for download for free from our public library.  Reluctant readers may be enticed to read more with one of these cool gadgets.
5.  Consult a recommended reading list for suggestions (SC Picture Book Award Nominees and past winners, AASL recommendations, www.readkiddoread.com)
6.  Email me at abedenbaugh@lex3.k12.sc.us and I'll try to send you a list of great titles.
Merry Christmas and Happy Reading!

New Books Have Arrived!
We just received a shipment of "student request" books yesterday.  I can't wait for students to stop by the library next week to see all of the football, cheerleading, fishing, hunting, scary, and new series books that we have for them! So far my favorite is The Toughest Cowboy: or How the Wild West Was Tamed by John Frank and illustrated by Zachary Pullen.  I'm sure I'll have a new favorite tomorrow!

Fall Book Fair a Huge Success!
We would like to thank all of the parents and grandparents who came out to eat lunch with their BLPS student and visit the book fair.  We raised over $1200 for our library thanks to your support!

Reading from the Mountains to the Sea
All students who were invited to attend our Summer Reading Ice Cream Party were allowed to add their pictures to our bulletin board.  Students were asked where they preferred going on vacation: the mountains or the beach.  They colored a body and we added their head shot before putting them in their preferred location on the board.  Several teachers and administrators also participated.  As you can see, most of us prefer the beach!  We had 37 students to qualify for our party by reading at least 10 books from our recommended lists over the summer and completing and returning the reading log on time.  Congratulations to these dedicated students!

Welcome Back!
Welcome back to the BLPS Media Center.  Orientation will take place August 17-19th for all K5, 1st, and 2nd graders.  The regular library schedule and student checkout will begin on Monday, August 22nd.  Invitations for the Summer Reading Ice Cream Social will go out on Friday, August 26th.  In order to get an invitation your child must have correctly completed and returned their summer reading log by Thursday, August 25th.
More Summer Reading Lists
I have just placed additional suggested summer reading lists from Scholastic under the Downloadable Documents tab.
Summer Reading
For the first time ever the BLPS Media Center is sponsoring a Summer Reading Program!  Pick up a reading list and log from the BLPS Media Center or download the appropriate list for your child below.  It's easy!
1.  Download the list that corresponds to your child's grade for the 2011-2012 school year.  (Look on the Downloadable Documents tab)
2.  Select at least 10 books from that list to read this summer.
3.  Have your child read the books independently or read them together during summer vacation.
4.  Complete the summer reading form and return the completed form to school by August 25, 2011 to receive a special treat.
Ebooks now Available for Checkout and Download!
FolletShelf is the place to go to download ebooks from BLPS!  You may download up to two titles at once. Click the picture below and let me know how you like it!
